The Green Mountain grows Swiss peas
The Graubünden-based startup The Green Mountain plans to start growing its protein peas in Switzerland. By bringing cultivation closer to production, the Hilcona subsidiary can shorten transport routes and reduce CO2 emissions.
The Green Mountain plans to cultivate its so-called protein peas in Switzerland for the first time. The Graubünden-based startup company conducted a successful pilot project last year, according to a statement.
“Swiss protein pea cultivation guarantees proximity to our suppliers and producers,” commented Werner Ott, CEO of The Green Mountain. Thanks to the shorter transport routes, the startup will be able to reduce its CO2 emissions. Another advantage is that Swiss protein peas do not require fertilizer, as Andreas Messerli, agricultural expert at Liechtenstein-based Hilcona AG, explains in the statement.
The Green Mountain is a subsidiary of Hilcona. It specializes in the development and production of vegan foods. Its range includes various meat alternatives, such as plant-based versions of sausages and schnitzels. The startup operates out of the HilconaTasteFactory in Landquart
