Liechtenstein foreign trade increased further in both directions in the final quarter of 2021. Growth in exports was somewhat higher than for imports. In both cases, Germany remains Liechtenstein’s most important trading partner.

According to the quarterly data published by the Liechtenstein Office for Statistics (AS), the Liechtenstein economy exported goods in the total amount of 814 million Swiss francs in the fourth quarter of 2021. This equates to growth of +2.2 percent on the same period of the previous year. Imports in Liechtenstein increased over the same period by +1.9 percent to goods in the amount of 422 million Swiss francs.

Germany remains the most important trading partner for Liechtenstein in both directions. In the quarter under review, Liechtenstein exported goods totaling 270 million Swiss francs to Germany, which represents growth of +35.2 percent on the fourth quarter of 2020. Imports from Germany increased over the same period by +3.4 percent to goods in the amount of 157 million Swiss francs. At goods totaling 93 million Swiss francs, exports to the second-ranked USA were actually down by -7.3 percent year on year, while imports from the same country fell by -58.8 percent for the same time frame to goods in the amount of 9 million Swiss Francs. In the fourth quarter of 2021, Liechtenstein imported goods totaling 83 million Swiss francs from Austria, which is the principality’s second-most important trading partner in terms of imports. This equates to a contraction of -12.8 percent versus the same quarter of the previous year. At the same time, exports to Austria fell by -3.5 percent to goods worth 85 million Swiss francs overall.

Foreign trade data for Liechtenstein and Switzerland is not included in the most recent statistics. Generally speaking, this data is not taken into account for surveys conducted by the Office for Statistics in Liechtenstein, as the trade of goods with Switzerland is recorded at Swiss border posts.
