A stand-up pouch developed by Hilcona on the basis of MonoPP has won the WorldStar prize from the World Packaging Organization. The food company from Schaan in Liechtenstein developed the sustainable pouch in conjunction with the packaging specialists Mondi.

A stand-up pouch made from polypropylene based mono-material (MonoPP) has been awarded a WorldStar prize by the World Packaging Organization (WPO). The pasteurization-compatible bag was developed jointly by the packaging experts from Hilcona and Mondi, further details of which can be found in a press release issued by the Schaan-based food manufacturer. “Hilcona played a key role in the development of this award-winning packaging”, explains Julia Bredemeier, packaging expert at the Hilcona Group, in the press release. “The excellent mono-material packaging solution offers an attractive alternative to multi-layer, non-recyclable packaging”, she concludes.

According to the press release, the WorldStar awards are the leading global packaging awards and are colloquially referred to as the “Oscars of packaging”. To be eligible for this international competition, candidates must first qualify in their own country. The stand-up pouch from Hilcona and Mondi achieved this by winning the Swiss Packaging Award in the category of sustainability.

The sustainable stand-up pouch from Mondi and Hilcona will be used by COOP, one of Switzerland's largest retail and wholesale companies, as part of its own brand range. With this award, the WPO aims to “prove that good packaging can be an essential solution to many contemporary problems”, as Luciana Pellegrino, Senior Vice President Marketing at WPO, explains in the press release, adding that: “For this reason, we are encouraging all companies from around the world to take advantage of this global opportunity to promote their packaging by measuring themselves against the best of the best packaging innovations on a global scale”.
