Liechtenstein food group Hilcona is offering its meadows as a home to two Demeter bee colonies, each with around 40,000 bees. The Bee Hilcona project was launched on the initiative of employees.

International food group Hilcona will be offering a home to two Demeter bee colonies on meadows by its factory premises. With around 80,000 bees, it is hoped this will help in the fight against declining bee populations and improve biodiversity. The bee hives will be supervised by Marco Jehle-Radkohl, head of the first Demeter-certified beekeeping operation in Liechtenstein.
The specific site will be determined following consultation with the beekeeper. In the area surrounding the factory premises, there is a wide range of food available to the bees, Hilcona writes in a press release.
This initiative to give bees a home on the site of Hilcona AG in Schaan was down to some of its employees, who developed the idea into a sustainable concept. “When it comes to preserving biodiversity, every single contribution is important,” said CEO Martin Henck. “It feels great to be part of this project, which while separate from our day-to-day business brings such clear added value to society.”
