Hilcona farms have harvested more than 1,800 tons of spinach over the past few weeks. The pandemic boosted demand for organic vegetables and regional produce. Hilcona farms in Rheintal are now also ready to harvest baby carrots and peas.

During the pandemic, people were cooking at home more in Liechtenstein and Switzerland, as Hilcona explained in a press release. Farms of the food company from Schaan have seen a considerable increase in demand for organic vegetables and regional produce. Hilcona reports that spinach harvesting is currently “in full swing”.

“We have harvested more than 1,820 tons of spinach over the past few weeks, including 175 tons of organic spinach,” said Andreas Messerli from Hilcona Agrar AG. “Demand for organic spinach has also increased this year.” The press release highlights that the leafy vegetable from the Rheintal is a “sprinter of the field varieties” and is used in Hilcona’s own spinach-ricotta tortellini.

According to Ueli Giger, the Rheintal offers “extremely good conditions for growing vegetables”. Specifically, the crop consultant at Hilcona Agrar AG mentions the sunshine, excellent water supply and highly fertile ground. This allows Hilcona’s farmers in the Rheintal to “cultivate top quality”. In the coming weeks, Hilcona farms will begin to harvest baby carrots and peas.
