At present, six Demeter bee colonies have made their home on the premises of Hilcona’s headquarters in Schaan. The colonies are being looked after by beekeeper Marco Jehle-Radkohl. Alongside the green roofs at the company’s headquarters, the project forms part of efforts to support regional beekeepers.

Hilcona has announced that six bee colonies, which are being looked after using the Demeter method, are currently residing in the meadows situated at the Hilcona factory premises in Schaan, further details of which can be found in a press release. Hilcona established the first two Demeter colonies, which each contain around 40,000 bees, in 2020. “With our Bee-Hilcona initiative and the green roofs on top of the buildings at our Schaan site, we are supporting the efforts of beekeepers in the region”, explains Andrea Gerber, Head of Sustainability at Hilcona, in the press release.

Hilcona brought Marco Jehle-Radkohl on board to take care of the bees. According to the press release, he is one of the few beekeepers in Liechtenstein and eastern Switzerland who keep bees using the Demeter method, a concept which prioritizes the bees themselves and their natural needs.

The project is the brainchild of Hilcona employees, who developed a sustainable concept based around this initial idea. “Local honey is a high-quality, pure foodstuff”, explains Jehle-Radkohl in the press release, adding that: “Honey from the region not only supports local beekeepers and honey bees, but is also sustainable, helps to cut the carbon footprint, ensures greater biodiversity and plays a significant role in the pollination of agricultural crops”.
