Liechtenstein’s tourism sector recorded more overnight stays last summer season than in the previous year. Guests numbers were also higher than in summer 2018. Most guests were from Germany and Switzerland.

Liechtenstein can look back on a successful summer season. The latest tourism statistics from the Office for Statistics (AS) show that from May to October this year, 52,033 guests spent a total of 83,524 nights in Liechtenstein. Compared to the summer season 2018, this is a 20.3 per cent increase in guest numbers. The number of overnight stays rose by 15.8 per cent in the same period, but the average length of stay was 1.6 nights, representing a small drop below the previous year.  

In comparison to neighboring countries, Liechtenstein enjoyed the largest growth in overnight stays. Switzerland reported an increase in overnight stays of 2.4 per cent, while Austria recorded a 2.2 per cent increase. Hotels in the Rhine Valley benefited the most from Liechtenstein’s successful figures. Here, overnight stays rose by 20.7 per cent to 62,016. The Alpenhotels in Steg and Malbun reported 21,508 overnight stays, or a 3.5 per cent increase over summer 2018.

With a total of 20,333 overnight stays between May and October, most nights were booked by guests from Germany, though they made up 0.4 per cent fewer nights than in summer 2018 with a proportion of 24.3 per cent this year. Swiss guests spent 20,274 nights in Liechtenstein, representing 24.3 per cent of the total. The third largest group were guests from the USA, with a ratio of 6.8 per cent. The highest increase in overnight stays came from guests from the Netherlands. Their proportion rose by 3.1 per cent to 2,610 overnight stays.
