The Principality of Liechtenstein is celebrating its 300th birthday in 2019. In these times of rising protectionism, Liechtenstein greatly values international dialogue and good relationships with its neighbours, said Alois, Hereditary Prince of Liechtenstein, at the anniversary event.

The ceremony held in Vaduz on Wednesday to mark the 300th anniversary of the Principality of Liechtenstein included as guests the three federal presidents of Austria, Germany and Switzerland, namely Alexander van der Bellen, Frank-Walter Steinmeier and Ueli Maurer. The “positive and close cooperation” with neighbouring countries is one of the reasons for Liechtenstein’s success, Hereditary Prince Alois noted in his speech. He emphasised that it was especially important to focus on international dialogue in these times where we are seeing “an unstable and multipolar global order, a rise in protectionism and a weakening of multilateral cooperation”. In this respect, Liechtenstein can look back on positive experiences specifically in relation to regulation of international financial services.

Liechtenstein can make a unique contribution to these international conversations. “Our special form of government with a monarchy and direct democracy established on parliamentary principles brings about grassroots, unbureaucratic and cost-effective government, which at the same time takes a long-term view and is considered with regard to incentive effects,” the Hereditary Prince said.

Sustainable development is of particular importance for Liechtenstein. “By taking smart steps towards comprehensive sustainability, we not only raise the appeal of Liechtenstein as a country, but also assume international responsibility and create added value to the benefit of the community of states.” The Principality already has a number of sustainability initiatives. “If we are successful in developing this area, the respect and recognition we receive for our sustainability can match that which we currently enjoy for the products and services offered by our companies in industry and finance.”

On January 23, 1719, the Holy Roman Emperor Charles VI decreed that the dominion of Schellenberg and the earldom of Vaduz be elevated to the status of an imperial principality under the name of Liechtenstein.
