Liechtenstein is to be better connected to the public transport networks of the two neighboring countries with its own suburban railway system in future. According to a press release from the government in Vaduz, Deputy Prime Minister of the Principality of Liechtenstein Daniel Risch and Austrian Minister of Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology Leonore Gewessler issued a final statement of intent on a suburban railway for Liechtenstein on Tuesday. The suburban railway will operate between Feldkirch and Buchs SG along the existing route. This means that the suburban railways in Vorarlberg and in the canton of St. Gallen will be connected, thus offering commuters an alternative to their car. A long-distance stop is also intended for Nendeln. Daniel Risch is quoted in the press release, saying: “If we meet the growing demand for mobility in as environmentally friendly and sustainable a way as possible, Liechtenstein will also become a more attractive residential and business location in future. The completion of Liechtenstein’s suburban railway is an important project with regard to this.” Leonore Gewessler views the project as an important contribution to the changing mobility in the region. The Minister for Climate Action is quoted, saying: “Even now at the time of the coronavirus crisis, investments in climate protection are important as they boost the economy and create jobs for many people.” One of the next steps is the final decision on the funding and implementation of the project. |
