LIEmobil has put its first electric bus into operation on the No. 12 route in Liechtenstein. By the start of 2023, a further three buses from the Spanish manufacturer Irizar will be added to the fleet. In ten years’ time, LIEmobil will have fully completed its transition to electric buses.

The first electric bus in the LIEmobil network completed its maiden voyage on Sunday, December 11. From December 18 onwards, the transport company responsible for public transport in Liechtenstein will use the second-generation e-bus from Irizar e-mobility on the No. 12 route between Buchs and Schaan, LIEmobil writes in a press release. A further three electric buses from Irizar are set to be added to its fleet by January 2023.

With the four buses, LIEmobil can cover around 10 percent of its route network electrically and therefore reduce its CO2 emissions by around 250 tons per year, the company explains. The electric buses are to be operated with electricity sourced from renewables, and the braking energy is also used to charge the batteries with a total capacity of 343 kilowatt hours. With an efficiency of around 90 percent for the electric drive, each bus has a range of roughly 250 kilometers.

Over the next few years, LIEmobil intends to gradually electrify its bus operations. In 2026, a third of the transport services are to be provided in electric vehicles, with this proportion set to rise to 50 percent just two years later. By 2032, the entire LIEmobil vehicle fleet is to be converted to electric buses. “With the continuous and consistent electrification of the bus fleet, LIEmobil is making a significant contribution to ensuring that public transport is operated on an even more sustainable basis and to achieving Liechtenstein’s climate goals”, the company writes in the press release.
