Oerlikon Balzers has brought to market a new coating product based on diamonds. This new surface solution can be used to work more precisely and carefully with demanding materials such as graphite and ceramics.

The Liechtenstein-based company Oerlikon Balzers, headquartered in Balzers, has presented a new product range in the area of diamond coating. According to a press release, the new line Baldia offers tool coatings that utilize the properties of diamonds.

Diamond is characterized by its unsurpassed hardness, wear resistance, and high thermal conductivity. Additionally, diamond mostly does not react with other substances. For this reason, diamond is suited to coating tools, particularly for working with materials that are also hard and very abrasive, such as ceramics in dentistry and graphite in mold construction.

According to the press release, the Baldia portfolio also comprises coatings for aluminum alloys, which are used in aviation and aerospace as well as in the automotive industry. The new coatings aim to make tools last longer and make working with materials more efficient.

Wolfgang Kalss, Head of Cutting Tools at Oerlikon Balzers, is quoted in the press release, saying: “Our new BALDIA portfolio allows our customers to machine highly challenging special materials economically and to increase the service life of their cutting tools.”
