Oerlikon has acquired the German company D-Coat GmbH. The diamond coating specialist will expand Oerlikon Balzers’ portfolio of cutting tools applied in the aerospace and automotive industries.

Oerlikon Balzers has strengthened its expertise in diamond coatings. As the company writes in a statement, its parent company has acquired D-Coat GmbH. Founded in 2006, the company is headquartered in Erkelenz in the German state of Nordrhein-Westfalen and is one of the technology leaders in diamond coatings for cutting tools. Its coatings provide tools, machine components and electrodes with resistance against most chemical substances, low friction coefficients and maximum wear resistance, according to the statement.

“D-Coat’s technologies complement Oerlikon Balzers’ existing diamond coating services extremely well,” commented Marc Desrayaud, Head of Business Unit Balzers Industrial Solutions at Oerlikon, in the statement. “Combining our expertise makes us a clear technology leader for these applications.” The solutions are used by customers in industries such as the aerospace, automotive, and die and mold industries.

D-Coat will be Oerlikon Balzers’ fourth and biggest Customer Centre for diamond coatings, while the German company’s operations in Erkelenz will continue as part of Oerlikon Balzers. “Becoming a part of Oerlikon Balzers will help us grow the business diamond coating on cutting tools,” said Olaf Dietrich, co-founder of D-Coat. Both parties have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
