Ospelt wants to expand business in Bendern
The Ospelt Group wants to increase its production capacity in the area of pet food. To do this, the family-owned company plans to expand operations at its headquarters in Bendern. Investments running into double-digit millions are to be made.
The Ospelt Group, which is mainly famous for its Malbuner brand, has also been active in the pet food sector since the end of the nineties. Alexander Ospelt, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Ospelt Group, explains in an interview with Marc Iseli in the Handelszeitung that the company purchases all the offal in food quality that is available on the Swiss market. A significant amount of the pet food is produced at the Group’s headquarters in Bendern.
In the interview Ospelt explains that “the volume of the pet food business has assumed massive proportions”. With the high wages in Liechtenstein Ospelt is relying on high rationalisation of production to compete with its European counterparts. Ospelt says this will safeguard jobs at the company.
In the coming years, the company wants to expand production at the Bendern site. Ospelt explains that production capacity for pet food is to be increased this year from the current 100,000 to 120,000 tons. The family-owned company is planning to invest double-digit millions to achieve this.
Ospelt says Liechtenstein and Switzerland have “several advantages compared with the EU” as he explains his commitment to Bendern. “We have very good conditions when it comes to infrastructure, as in water, steam and electricity - which are essential production factors. “
Production for the sandwich market is also to be expanded at Geroldswil in the canton of Zurich. Switzerland is “our home market", says Ospelt. Of the Group’s six production facilities, only one, located in Thüringen, Germany, is outside Switzerland and Liechtenstein.
