Pandemic weakens foreign trade
Vaduz – Liechtenstein’s foreign trade suffered severe losses in the second quarter of 2020, with exports falling more sharply than imports. Germany remains Liechtenstein’s most important trading partner despite strong losses in both directions.
According to the quarterly results of the Office for Statistics (AS), Liechtenstein exported goods with a total value of 538 million Swiss francs in the second quarter of 2020. This was 37.1 percent below figures from last year’s second quarter. It imported goods in the value of 350 million francs, a 23.4 decline from the same period last year.
Germany remains the most important trading partner in both directions of Liechtenstein’s foreign trade. In the second quarter, Liechtenstein exported goods to Germany in the value of 148 million francs, 25 percent less than in the same quarter last year. It imported goods in the value of 117 million francs from Germany, 32.3 percent less than the previous year.
Exports to the U.S., Liechtenstein’s second highest trading partner, were 41.3 percent below the previous year’s figure with goods worth 75 million francs. In contrast, imports from the U.S. increased by 15.4 percent over the same period, amounting to goods in the value of 24 million francs.
Liechtenstein imported goods in the value of 83 million francs from Austria, its second most important trading partner in terms of imports, in the second quarter of 2020. This corresponds to a 25.8 percent decline compared to the same period last year. It exported goods in the value of 63 million francs to Austria, a drop of 22.2 percent. Foreign trade relations with Switzerland are not included in the current foreign trade statistics from the Office for Statistics as trade in goods with Switzerland is recorded at Swiss border points.
