Liechtenstein’s “spatial concept” approved by the government represents a guiding framework for spatial activities within the country. Its guidelines aim to ensure sustainable development of the economic region and area for living.

The spatial concept guidelines for Liechtenstein aim to encourage “cooperation across spatial, technical and institutional boundaries” according to a press release from the Ministry of Infrastructure, Economic Affairs and Sport. “The spatial concept is based on the principles of sustainable development and pursues the goal of leaving behind an attractive economic region and area for living for future generations as well as keeping the countryside intact.”
In order to create the spatial concept, the existing spatial factors and their development over the past few decades were investigated. The objectives derived from this concern the areas of competitiveness, quality of life, business location, and the quality of residential development. Furthermore, the objectives are differently assigned to the country’s three residential areas and three regions of countryside.
The press release goes on to explain that the principles of the spatial concept are also to be used in the upcoming review of the district court plan. This will be conducted by the government in collaboration with the administrative offices, municipalities, and neighboring regions. For instance, in residential development the aim is for “public transport as well as pedestrian and bicycle traffic to achieve higher importance in overall mobility.” Additionally, in order to protect the ecological functions of natural, cultural and mountainous landscapes, attention should be paid to “further developing recreational areas and tourist regions that are close to nature in a way that is environmentally friendly and does not harm the landscape.”
