Data security specialist to hold inaugural lecture
Pavel Laskov is the new Hilti Chair for Data and Application Security at the University of Liechtenstein. In his inaugural lecture on 3 April, the specialist in data security will be talking about the risks of hidden crypto mining.
Blockchain applications need cryptocurrencies, which must be mined. This process of mining is generally carried out by specialist data centers, the University of Liechtenstein reported in a press release. Since last year, computers of uninvolved and unaware third parties have also been secretly hijacked for this purpose, which increases their energy costs as well as the wear and tear on their devices. This unauthorized access to third-party computers harbors great risk for those involved.
Pavel Laskov, the new Hilti Chair for Data and Application Security at the University of Liechtenstein, will use his inaugural lecture on 3 April to discuss hidden crypto mining. He will explore the typical processes and financial incentives as well as ways to detect hidden crypto mining. Pavel Laskov will also introduce the latest research on this topic.
Pavel Laskov is one of the international pioneers in the use of artificial intelligence for data system security. He studied Computer and Systems Engineering in Moscow, before moving to the University of Delaware for his Master’s and PhD, completed in 2001. After, he was Project and Research Group Head at the Fraunhofer Institut FIRST in Berlin, lecturer at the University of Tübingen and Head of Security Product Innovation Team at the Huawei European Research Center in Munich from 2014 to 2018.
