University of Liechtenstein appoints first female Rector
Ulrike Baumöl will become the first female Rector of the University of Liechtenstein. The economist is currently Dean of the FernUniversität in Hagen, Germany. Markus Jäger will become Executive Director. He has previously worked at Hilti, SFS and VAT.
The University Council has successfully filled the vacant leadership positions. In both cases, candidates have been chosen that also boast private-sector experience. Following her undergraduate degree and subsequent PhD at Dortmund University and after her role as a lecturer at the University of St.Gallen, Ulrike Baumöl was responsible for IT project management in areas such as finance and investment at Swiss Life. Since 2006, she has been Chair of Information Management at FernUniversität Hagen, a remote learning institute in Germany, where for two years she was also Dean of the Faculty of Economics. The German-Swiss dual national will take over as Rector of the University of Liechtenstein from October 1, 2019.
Both during and after studying economics in Innsbruck, Markus Jäger worked at Hilti in Schaan and further abroad. Later on, he took the role of CFO at the US company Briggs & Stratton for their operations in Europe and the Middle East, before heading up the Corporate Controlling department at the SFS Group in Heerbrugg SG. Since 2015, the Liechtenstein-Austrian dual national has been Head of Controlling and Treasury at the VAT Group in Haag SG, supporting the vacuum specialist’s IPO, among other achievements.
During the presentation, Klaus Tschütscher indicated that personal qualities played a role in the Council’s decision in addition to professional qualifications. The President of the University Council praised Ulrike Baumöl‘s extensive management experience, enthusiasm and inclusive personality. “We are also proud to present the first female Rector in the history of the University of Liechtenstein”, he commented. Markus Jäger’s highly analytical, calm and considered persona impressed the Council. According to Markus Kaiser, Vice-President of the University Council, the decisions were unanimously in favor of both successful candidates.
Baumöl and Jäger both see huge potential in the university. "It is still a young institution, but has already successfully carved out an impressive position”, Ulrike Baumöl commented. The University of Liechtenstein has already become a fixture in certain research and teaching areas. “I am proud to have the opportunity of supporting its future progress”, she concluded.
It was a similar story for Markus Jäger: “The university is a high-performing institution of higher education in the international Lake Constance region and enjoys a good reputation”, the future Executive Director commented. The process of making the university fit for the future is already underway. Jäger is delighted to have the chance to support this process.
