Founded in 1961 as an Abendtechnikum, the University of Liechtenstein gradually developed into a full-fledged university over time. This year, the University of Liechtenstein celebrates ten years as an official university. There are plans in place to hold birthday celebrations over the summer at the earliest.

The University of Liechtenstein started life in 1961 as an Abendtechnikum (evening/weekend college offering vocational training classes), the university writes in a press release. Over the years, this evening college first developed into the Liechtenstein School of Engineering (LIS) and University of Applied Sciences before later becoming a University. With the Law on the University of Liechtenstein entering into force on February 1, 2011, the former University of Applied Sciences officially gained University status.
This year, the University of Liechtenstein is therefore looking back on ten years of history as a university. However, the press release explains that due to the current pandemic situation, any celebrations will only be held in summer – at the earliest. The press release also contains a series of interesting facts and trivia relating to the history and development of the university. Analysis of the past few years has also revealed that around one quarter of students remain in Liechtenstein upon completion of their studies, with another quarter opting to stay in the Rhine Valley region after receiving their degree, the university states.
These days, the University of Liechtenstein positions itself as “an internationally accredited and networked educational and research institution with strong roots in the country and the Lake Constance region”, the press release explains further. Klaus Tschütscher, President of the University Council, is also quoted here: “I am particularly pleased to have helped drive and implement the development of the University of Liechtenstein as head of government and to be its president today”. In cooperation with the government, the University of Liechtenstein recently founded the Startup Platform, where companies are supported by experts in their efforts to optimize business models.
