The University of Zurich (UZH), its Europa Institute and the University of Liechtenstein have announced their intention to establish a Liechtenstein Institute. This will be based at UZH with the aim of intensifying scientific cooperations between the three institutions

In future, a Liechtenstein Institute will seek to improve the scientific network within the country and beyond. Hereditary Prince Alois von und zu Liechtenstein has announced the signing of a letter of intent to establish such an institute on the part of the University of Zurich (UZH), its Europa Institute and the University of Liechtenstein. During his speech at UZH on the subject of “Challenges and Opportunities for Small States” on Thursday, the Hereditary Prince outlined the objective of intensifying and institutionalizing scientific cooperation between the three institutions in the fields of education and research

As co-initiator, Klaus Tschütscher, President of the University Council of the University of Liechtenstein, emphasizes in a press release how “cooperation and networking on an equal footing are part of the recipe for success of a small university”. The Liechtenstein Institute will be associated with UZH, with its registered office to be located at the UZH's Europa Institute. The institute is to be established in the legal form of a foundation under Liechtenstein law with its legal seat in Liechtenstein. Operations are scheduled to commence in spring 2022.

The new Liechtenstein Institute should serve as a platform for public events, discussions, seminars and publications. Moreover, it has been conceived with the aim of offering a coordination framework for academic research and teaching. In addition, it will both generate and exploit synergies with the Centre for Liechtenstein Law at UZH.

The largely voluntary management committee is to be appointed by the foundation council and an institute council. This governing body shall be responsible for managing the strategic orientation of the Liechtenstein Institute.
