Architecture students plan wooden tower
The University of Liechtenstein is working together with two architecture schools from Norway and the Netherlands as well as a partner from industry to create a new observation tower of wood. The first models are to be presented in Schaan on Saturday.
In the context of an Erasmus project, the Institute of Architecture and Planning at the University of Liechtenstein is collaborating with the Academy of Architecture from the Netherlands, the NTNU Trondheim and carpentry firm Frommelt Zimmerei und Ing. Holzbau AG. Their aim is to develop an observation tower of wood for the region, the University reported in a press release.
Wood plays a pivotal role in Alpine building culture. Modern machine processes have enabled timber joints that in the past had to be created by hand. This indigenous material also continues to grow in significance for reasons of sufficiency and grey energy in building materials, a hotly discussed topic at the moment.
The potential of timber building structures is currently being explored on the basis of models and prototypes in a seminar at the workshop of Frommelt Zimmerei. On Saturday, students will be presenting six first tower models on the village square in Schaan.
