EU Ambassador is guest of the University of Liechtenstein
Petros Mavromichalis, EU Ambassador to Switzerland and Liechtenstein, has held a speech on the war in Ukraine and its consequences for the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) at the University of Liechtenstein. His lecture followed a meeting with Liechtenstein’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport, Dominique Hasler.
EU Ambassador Petros Mavromichalis has given a talk on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine on the campus of the University of Liechtenstein. As outlined in the announcement on the university website, his lecture entitled “The geopolitical awakening of the EU – the Ukraine war and its consequences” focused on the war’s implications for the EU and the EEA.
The EU must strengthen its energy security and economic resilience and enhance its ability to respond to external threats: “A strong EU domestic market, with which Liechtenstein is connected thanks to the EEA, the decarbonization of our economy and the close collaboration with like-minded non-EU countries in multilateral bodies form the basis for Europe’s self-assertion in this difficult environment.”
The collaboration between the EU and the EEA/EFTA countries in times of crisis had already been focused on in a business meeting between Mavromichalis and Liechtenstein’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport, Dominique Hasler, earlier in the day. In a press release, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Education and Sport reports that the ongoing negotiations with the European Commission about a possible new EEA financing mechanism were also discussed.
The involvement of Liechtenstein and its neighboring countries in Ukraine was also discussed. The country is supporting emergency aid for victims of the conflict with supplementary credit of 1.8 million Swiss francs. The EU Ambassador recognized Liechtenstein’s veto initiative resolution, which play an important part in strengthening the UN General Assembly, creating greater transparency in the UN system and making it more effective.
